At our reading of Augustine's "City of God" this morning, I came across this quote:
They abstain from interference, because they fear that, if it fail of good effect, their own safety or reputation may be damaged or destroyed; not because they see that their preservation and good name are needful, that they may be able to influence those who need their instruction, but rather because they weakly relish the flattery and respect of men, and fear the judgments of the people, and the pain or death of the body; that is to say, their non-intervention is the result of selfishness, and not of love.
Augustine, Saint. The City of God (p. 13).
It made me think of the things that we are dealing with in our State right now. We have one person who is holding up a bill that will completely abolish abortion in Texas, but this seemingly "pro-life" Congressman has decided it is not worth bringing up.
Rep. Byron Cook has ignored the cries of Texians to support HB948 and pass it out of committee. And, make no mistake, time is running out for this bill. Friday (May 5th) is the last day that a bill can make it out of committee and go through the appropriate process to truly have a chance of getting put on the calendar.
We are asking you to get involved. I am including in this post a link to a postcard we created at GfBC. Please print it (on card stock if you have it) and mail it to Byron Cook. All the instructions are included. If you don't have cardstock, print it on regular paper and mail it as a letter.
Let's make sure that our Congressmen know that we see their selfishness and are willing to call it what it is. SDG!
